PROJECT 2 CHRISTMAS BOXES
INTRODUCTION
For Christmas boxes we collaborated across the other two DFSS courses. This was very worthwhile as we were able to bounce off of each other as a group and learn new things from each other as we all take different approaches to design. It was also beneficial because it brought such a range of ideas to the table which resulted in a successful outcome.
On the left is my own personal moodboard. As a group we decided to have a character going through each box, with each box being a different christmassy landscape. I chose to do a mountain/ village scene. Above is a task we completed in the theatre where we were given a massive variety of scraps and had to construct something. This was a great way to start working in groups and to meet other people.
INITIAL SKETCHES
I started with some simple sketches and these were my favourite ones. I really enjoyed using coloured pencil as I felt like I could visualise my ideas really easily. The far right sketch ended up being the design for my tiny village houses, and the mountains were a main feature of my final design.
MODELLING
This is the process of my village hut which was really fun to make. It used foamboard, brown paper, acrylic paint and cotton wool which created the snowy look on top.
I then moved on to creating all the small details for my design. Using tinfoil and acrylic paint I created a tiny bonfire. I also stuck wooden sticks on it afterwards to make it a bit more believable. Tinfoil turned out to be very useful for this project, as I also used it to create the 3D mountains that would sit at the back of my design. After a failed attempt to paper maiche this, I ended up just using white paint and glitter to disguise the tinfoil. The bottom picture is my completed backdrop. The aim was to make it look like a crisp winter sunrise. Lastly I made some tiny Christmas lights to hang up between the village huts.
FINAL MODEL
GROUP DISPLAY
Overall we were really happy with our final outcome. All the boxes had a similar sort of vibe but also showed off our own personal flare. The thing that linked our story together was the small snowman who was travelling through each box. I found it really interesting how we all took different approaches to making him as he ended up looking a bit different in each box!
