PROJECT 1 BBC 3 STUDIO DESIGN

INTRODUCTION

This was my very first project for DFTV. We were briefed and it sounded like a great project as we had so much freedom making it easy to show personality through our designs. I got off to a bit of a sticky start, not really knowing what I wanted to do. However I extended my research and settled on the idea of disco, with a particular focus on funky shapes and bright neon colours.

MOODBOARDS

I started my research looking at chat shows in general, trying to understand what sort of layout, colours and typography was used. This was far too broad and wasn't giving me any inspiration. However I started to look into disco, and found these unique shapes that I felt I could actually make a whole design out of.

WHITE MODELLING

After discovering the shapes, I went straight into white modelling, with a focus on symmetry in my design. I knew I wanted two different areas, and I decided to make one a chat area and one a disco dance floor. I also had this idea of tunnels at the back which the presenters would walk through.

To start off with I had this window at the back, showing a cityscape, but it was very disjointed and didn't contribute anything to my design. I ended up replacing it with bright neon tube lights that spread across the whole cyclorama.

STUDIO PLAN

This plan was a challenge as it was something very new and it took me a while to get my head around it, especially all the tiny signs and symbols. Even though there is quite a few elements to it, overall my design was quite simple therefore making it not too difficult to add the objects once I understood the rules of a studio plan.

VISUALS

These were my first crack at visuals. I did a rough drawing of my model, then used watercolour over the top. To add in more detail I then went over again in ink pen in quite a rough and sketchy style. I like these becasue they communicate the shapes and the overall feel of my design quite well, but they don't look as life like as I would want them to be.

After feedback I decided to go back and try another visual style. This was more photobashing, taking images of people and blending them to fit in with the design, making it look more like it would on television. I love the blur effect of this one and how the outfits the people are wearing match the whole design.

RENDERED MODEL

Making the final model of my design was by far my favourite part of this project. I loved all the colours and reflections that I created using silver paper and acetate. I was attempting to communicate a shiny pvc floor. The disco ball was a last minute addition and I would hope if it was on television it would perfectly catch and reflect light around the whole studio.
